Street Food of Myanmar - an Introduction (with grubs)
What actually is Burmese food?
I had no idea, despite being a dedicated foodie and having lived half my life in Asia.
So on my first day in Myanmar, I took a street food tour in Yangon to help me find out.
Watch along below.
During the rest of my time in Myanmar, I ate lots more local food (which also varies depending on the ethnic background) and really loved it!
I’m still surprised there aren’t restaurants around the world dedicated to the cuisine.
If you’re in Yangon, do check out Sa Ba Street Food Tours who I went with. It was a super fun evening, and Khattar (our guide) not only introduced us to a spread of food (we were stuffed by the end), but also explained about culture, life and other points of interest.
*I paid in full to attend the tour so you can trust that this is my fully objective recommendation.
Here’s a list of things we ate on the tour (all in the video):
Samosa salad
Mohinga
Lann Ta Ye Mont (fusion filled-dosa)
Burmese salads: Tea leaf salad, lemon salad, pennywort salad (my favourite!)
Lassi (strawberry and jaggery), and falooda
Si Chat Khout Swe (garlic noodles)
Steamed fish
Sago grubs! They’re actually quite tasty and I can happily eat a plate of them.
Sorry for a brief post this time.
More adventures from Myanmar to come real soon, including visiting an abandoned theme park, discovering an amazing secret sunrise/sunset location in Bagan and a stunning trek in Shan state.
